Wildcats Will Change the World

This is my final integrative project for my ART103 class, which is Creative Technologies.

For this project, I chose the theme, “you must be the change you wish to see in the world.” This quote reminded me of my Young Life team and our missionary community. For my subject matter, I chose a picture of me and my co-leader Brooke. I put pawprints on the sides of us because the school we lead at, Harrison High School, has wildcats as the mascot. On the back of the board, I put Young Life’s slogan, “You were made for this.” I chose to make my stickers out of green vinyl because our school’s color is green.

During the process, I started off by using the Carvey machine. The Carvey was my independent learning tool. I uploaded and traced the image of Brooke and me. I learned to use the machine by running a test run on a different material, with a smaller scaled image. After that was successful, I clamped down a new board and carved the image onto a piece of 12in x 6in maple wood. First, I ran the rough carving, which took about 40 minutes. Then, I changed the drill bit and ran the detail carve, which took another hour and five minutes. After that, I learned how to use the sticker machine. I uploaded and traced the same image of Brooke and me. Then, I ran the machine and peeled the stickers away from the vinyl. I applied a piece of the transfer paper, and I lined up the stickers to the wood figures as accurately as I could. I pressed down, and used a tool to apply pressure, until the stickers stayed stuck. Next, I traced an image of the Young Life logo and ran the machine to cut out the slogan. I went through the same process but put this sticker on the back of the wood. Finally, I traced an image of a paw print that I found on Google and followed the same process to apply to the front of the wood, next to the figures.

This was such a cool experience!
